New Member Education and The Norman Shield
Patrick O'Leary ‘16
Magister

As the Magister, it is my responsibility to prepare the new class of pledge brothers for Initiation into Sigma Chi. Working alongside my fellow Phi Phi Chapter brothers, we will work to instill in the pledges the ideals of Sigma Chi, develop their pride in and commitment to the Fraternity through lessons of learning, participation and responsibility.

Their pledge education will build off of a new program outlined by the International Fraternity in 2012. The Norman Shield, our familiar pledge manual created in 1929, will form the core of the program with weekly quizzes of pertinent historical accounts of Sigma Chi and its seven founders, along with interviews of the active brothers.

Following is an excerpt from the opening chapter of The Norman Shield:

“The object of a college education is not to make us finished scholars, nor to complete our education. Education is a lifelong process. The purpose of a college education is to awaken the importance of developing the mind -- to create an unquenchable thirst for knowledge… The primary purpose of Sigma Chi is to promote friendship, justice and learning. While friends can have a profound impact on your experiences in college, Sigma Chi aspires to develop brotherhood -- a deeper and more enduring type of friendship -- among its members.”

Led by our Rush Committee Co-Chairs: Matt Harris ‘17, Evan Shaulson ‘17 and Harry Taggart ‘17, we just concluded another very successful new member recruitment period, resulting in a diverse pledge class of 20 men that we feel will fit well into the Phi Phi Chapter. Many are involved in Penn athletics, continuing Phi Phi team traditions, though we have also attracted non-athletes as well. They hail from local high schools in PA, NJ, NY and CT and as far away as FL, TX, CA and Jamaica.
